SWITCH Mobility Automotive Ltd (SMAL), a division of Ashok Leyland, has unveiled its latest electric small commercial vehicles (e-SCVs), the IeV3 and IeV4.
Despite the growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs), the demand for electric commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over two tonnes remains low. To address this, SMAL is working to educate customers and offer extended test drives to showcase the benefits of EVs.
Educating and Engaging Customers
Mahesh Babu, CEO of SMAL, explained the company's two-pronged strategy. First, they are investing in educational initiatives to inform customers about EVs.
Second, the company is providing extended test drives, which allow drivers to experience the vehicle in real-world situations over several days, compared to the brief test drives generally associated with standard diesel automobiles.
This approach helps customers see how the vehicles perform in their specific applications and whether they generate income.
Conversion Rates and Market Growth
Despite the extensive test drives, Babu acknowledged that the conversion rate remains low, which is expected given the novelty of EVs. However, he emphasized that selling the first thousand vehicles is the hardest, and as market acceptance grows, sales will increase more rapidly.
Dual Voltage and Modular Design
SMAL has introduced a dual-voltage strategy with its IeV3 and IeV4 models. The IeV3 features a 25.6 kWh battery and operates on a 256-volt system, while the IeV4 has a 32.2 kWh battery with a 310-volt system.
This dual-voltage approach allows SMAL to meet varying performance needs. The company also employs a modular design, standardizing components across models to ensure scalability and efficiency.
Addressing Concerns About Durability and Recycling
Babu addressed concerns about the durability and reliability of EV batteries, noting that while battery chemistry may evolve, the core vehicle architecture remains unchanged.
EVs are designed for long-term use, with the potential to last 15 to 20 years, with battery replacements as the only major maintenance requirement.
Additionally, SMAL offers a 7-year warranty on EV batteries, and after their primary life, batteries can be repurposed for stationary applications. India also has a well-established battery recycling system, further ensuring the sustainability of EVs.
