SUN Mobility to Launch Africa’s Largest Battery Swapping Network with $135 Million Investment

Key Highlights

  • SUN Mobility raised $135 million, led by Helios Climate and PIDG.

  • Plans to launch Africa’s largest battery swapping network.

  • Over 900 battery swap stations already in India.

  • Supports two-wheeler, three-wheeler, four-wheeler, and heavy EVs.

  • Partners include IOCL, Vitol, and Bosch for global expansion.

SUN Mobility, a leader in battery swapping technology for electric vehicles (EVs), has raised $135 million in a landmark investment round. This funding will help the company expand its battery swapping network to Africa, marking a major step in its global growth. The investment round was led by Helios Climate, Africa’s top climate-focused investment platform, along with support from the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG).

This investment will be used to launch Africa’s largest battery swapping network and also boost SUN Mobility’s presence in India, where it already operates extensively.

What is Battery Swapping?

Battery swapping allows EV users to quickly replace a drained battery with a fully charged one at special stations. This method cuts down waiting time and solves many challenges associated with traditional charging methods.

SUN Mobility’s battery swapping platform is designed to work with various types of vehicles:

This flexibility makes it easy to scale and useful for both fleet operators and governments aiming to cut emissions and promote electric mobility.

Strong Presence in India

Founded in 2017 by the SUN Group and the Maini Group, SUN Mobility has already built a strong network in India:

  • Over 900 battery swapping stations are in operation

  • More than 50,000 EVs are powered by its technology

  • 1.4 million battery swaps are completed every month

By separating battery ownership from vehicles, SUN Mobility helps reduce EV costs and makes electric mobility more affordable. This approach also benefits fleet operators by lowering operating expenses.

Why Africa is the Next Big Step

SUN Mobility sees Africa as a key market because of:

  • Rapid urban growth and a rising middle class

  • High use of two- and three-wheelers, which contribute around 5% of Africa’s CO2 emissions

  • Expected demand of over 1.9 million electric two- and three-wheelers per year by 2030

The newly secured investment will help:

  • Build a wide battery swapping network in key African cities

  • Offer cost-effective and clean mobility solutions

  • Support local governments in reducing air pollution and improving transportation

Backed by Major Industry Players

SUN Mobility’s growth is supported by several strategic partners:

  • Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) – Partner for joint ventures and infrastructure

  • Vitol – Parent company of Vivo Energy, Africa’s largest fuel retailer, offering market reach in Africa

  • Bosch – Collaborating on technology and components for EVs

The company also has a joint venture with IOCL called IndoFastSwap Energy, aimed at rapidly expanding battery swapping networks in India.

Vision for the Future: Global Electrification

Chetan Maini, Co-Founder and Chairman of SUN Mobility, said:
We have built a modular, fast, and scalable battery swapping ecosystem that truly adapts to real-world mobility needs. The success we’ve seen in India and the growing interest globally, especially in Africa, confirm our approach. Our open, interoperable system helps make EV ownership easier and supports governments in reducing emissions at scale.”

Key Benefits of SUN Mobility’s Battery Swapping Model:

  • Reduces EV purchase costs by separating battery ownership

  • Quick battery swaps take just a few minutes

  • Scalable solution for different vehicle types and regions

  • Helps lower air pollution and emissions

  • Convenient for fleet operators with large numbers of EVs

What’s Next?

With this $135 million funding, SUN Mobility plans to:

  • Build Africa’s largest battery swapping network

  • Expand further into markets like South-East Asia

  • Innovate in battery technology for various types of EVs

  • Work with vehicle manufacturers and governments to support clean transport policies

SUN Mobility’s global push, starting with Africa, aims to make EV adoption more affordable and convenient while contributing to a cleaner, greener planet.
