Mahindra & Mahindra, known for its leadership in small commercial vehicles, is gearing up to challenge Tata Motors in the mini electric truck market. The company announced plans to launch its electric mini trucks in the coming months.
The manufacturer of Supro and Jeeto is set to launch its electric mini truck in the next months, according to the company's top management at the Q1 earnings press conference.
Waiting on Government Clarity for FAME III
However, the company's management is waiting for clarity from the government on the third edition of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME III) initiative before introducing its E-LCVs.
Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO (Auto and Farm Sector), highlighted that the company has already lined up a couple of sub-2-tonne vehicles that are ready for launch.
"We are prepared with a couple of options, one of which we intend to implement as soon as we receive clarity on the following FAME scheme because we are waiting to see what comes out. As you are aware, the current one excludes four-wheelers. So we're just waiting to see what FAME III has to offer before making a decision on how to launch it," he added.
Optimistic Outlook on E-LCVs
Jejurikar stated that e-LCVs have a lower total cost of ownership than ICE alternatives and that they will play an important part in decarbonizing the economy through mass fast transportation.
Currently, the continuing Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) only offers demand incentives for electric two- and three-wheelers, not light electric trucks in India, which were also excluded from earlier FAME schemes.
Mahindra's upcoming Electric LCV range will compete in the rapidly developing e-commerce and on-demand delivery services industry.
With the government reducing subsidies from Rs 15,000 per kWh to Rs 5,000 per kWh under the current Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme, M&M has also transitioned from NMC to LFP chemistry, which is considerably cheaper and more energy-dense, Jejurikar stated.
