Madhya Pradesh is witnessing a rapid and people-focused transformation in its road infrastructure under the motto “Lok Nirman Se Lok Kalyan” (Public Construction for Public Welfare). The state’s Public Works Department (PWD)is not just building roads for transport but using them as tools to bring development, innovation, and equal opportunities across regions.

Extensive Road Network Under PWD

Madhya Pradesh’s PWD manages a vast network of roads, which includes:

  • Total road length: 80,775 km

    • National Highways: 9,315 km

    • State Highways: 11,389 km

    • Major District Roads: 25,639 km

    • Other District Roads: 34,432 km

Achievements in the Last 14 Months

In just over a year, the state has completed major projects worth thousands of crores:

  • 5,500 km of new or strengthened roads built at a cost of ₹6,400 crore

  • 1,500 km of roads blacktopped using ₹345 crore

  • 110 bridges and elevated corridors completed with a budget of ₹2,000 crore

Ongoing Projects to Boost Connectivity

Several key road and bridge projects are currently under development:

  • ₹22,500 crore investment for building 10,000 km of roads

  • ₹10,463 crore allocated for 474 bridges and flyovers

Six Major Corridors for Regional Growth

To promote balanced development across regions, six major corridors have been launched:

  • Narmada Pragati Path

  • Vindhya Expressway

  • Malwa-Nimar Corridor

  • Atal Pragati Path

  • Bundelkhand Corridor

  • Central India Development Path

Big Push for Highway Expansion

To improve connectivity in both backward and urban areas:

  • 4,740 km of national highways have been upgraded to four-lane roads

  • Work is ongoing on another 3,050 km stretch

₹1 Lakh Crore Projects with NHAI

The Madhya Pradesh Government has signed a major agreement with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to develop 22 new road projects across 4,010 km. The total investment is estimated at ₹1 lakh crore.

Key expressways and corridors under this agreement include:

  • Indore-Bhopal Greenfield Corridor

  • Bhopal-Jabalpur Corridor

  • Lucknow-Raipur Expressway

  • Agra-Gwalior Highway

  • Ujjain-Jhalawar Route

  • Satna-Chitrakoot and Rewa-Sidhi Highways

Statement from PWD

An official from the Public Works Department stated:
A road is no longer just a road. It is a promise of progress, connection, and empowerment. Every project undertaken today lays the foundation for a better tomorrow.”

Special Projects for Simhastha and Urban Connectivity

In preparation for Ujjain Simhastha 2028, the Indore-Ujjain road is being widened to six lanes. Also, the Ujjain-Jaora Greenfield Expressway, the state’s first greenfield expressway, is under construction.

Ropeway projects are being developed in:

  • Ujjain

  • Sagar

  • Jabalpur

These projects are supported by the central government.

Quality Control and Use of Modern Technology

To ensure high standards in construction:

  • Techniques like Full Depth Reclamation, White Topping, and Micro Surfacing are used

  • Software-based inspection systems and secret sampling have been introduced

  • In the last two months, 104 construction works across 21 districts were inspected, and necessary actions taken

Digital Tools for Transparency and Monitoring

The government is using digital platforms for better project monitoring and public participation:

  • Lok Path App

  • Sarthak App

  • Integrated Project Management System

  • PM Gati Shakti Portal

Focus on Human Resource Development and Long-Term Planning

To improve efficiency and future planning:

  • Skill assessment conducted for 1,750 engineers

  • Structured training programs launched

  • Work in progress on a Road Network Master Plan and Road Sector Policy

Environmentally Friendly Development

PWD is promoting green and sustainable practices:

  • Preference given to tree transplantation instead of cutting

  • Initiatives like Ground Water Recharge Bores and Lok Kalyan Sarovar are being implemented for water conservation
