Chennai-based Ashok Leyland is preparing to launch its first vehicle scrappage facility in Tamil Nadu under a franchise model. The company plans to expand its network to three or four centers within a year.
Shenu Agarwal, the company's Managing Director and CEO, stated that they had agreed on a place for the first centre, which would be in Tamil Nadu, and that they were also working on other locations.
"We hope to be able to open three to four franchised centers within the next year," he said on the sidelines of an industry event. The franchisee will operate under the Re.AL program.
Agarwal elaborated on the franchisee model that the firm will use for vehicle scrappage centers, saying, "We will provide the necessary know-how and expertise on setting up and managing the scrapping centres, but the day-to-day operations will be handled by our franchisee partners, who will also bear the investment costs."
Government Push for Vehicle Scrappage
The Indian government is pressing the vehicle industry to phase out old, inefficient vehicles as part of a larger effort to decrease pollution, improve road safety, and revive the industry. The regulation requires passenger vehicles older than 20 years and commercial vehicles older than 15 years to undergo a fitness test or be scrapped.
The policy also provides incentives, such as discounts on new vehicles, to encourage compliance and the development of a formal vehicle recycling business, with the goal of decreasing waste and creating jobs.
Tata Motors Leading in Scrappage Facilities
Meanwhile, Tata Motors, a key competitor, has already established five vehicle scrappage facilities under its Re.Wi.Re initiative, with plans to open more. Tata Motors currently has the capacity to scrap 72,000 vehicles annually and has scrapped over 4,000 vehicles in FY24.
