In 2024, the Gurugram traffic authorities took strict action against lane violations by commercial vehicles. A total of 58,903 challans were issued this year, resulting in fines of ₹5 crore.
Out of all the cases, 97 incidents were specific to heavy commercial vehicles breaking lane rules. The enforcement drive was focused on national highways and expressways in Gurugram, where these vehicles are required to follow strict lane discipline.
Officials stated that commercial vehicles must stick to the middle lane on three-lane highways or the second-most left lane on four-lane highways. Private cars and taxis were not part of this enforcement.
During a special campaign from December 12 to 15, 33 additional cases were filed under Section 285 of the BNS. This section deals with acts causing danger or obstruction on public roads.
DCP (Traffic) Virender Vij stressed the importance of lane discipline for road safety. “Improper lane discipline and sudden lane changes are major causes of road accidents, putting everyone at risk. We regularly conduct awareness programs for truck drivers, company employees, and bus operators to educate them about traffic rules,” he said.
He further explained that proper lane discipline reduces accidents and ensures safer journeys for all road users. “We will continue such enforcement drives to maintain road safety and encourage compliance with traffic laws,” he added.

Strict enforcement is crucial as many commercial vehicle drivers still ignore lane rules, even on well-marked highways. Raising awareness among truck drivers about lane regulations is essential to improve safety on national highways and prevent road accidents.
